When to Climb

Kilimanjaro can technically be climbed year-round, but timing dramatically affects your comfort, visibility, and summit success rate. There are two dry-season windows considered ideal:

Best Months: January–March and June–October

June to October is the most popular window, coinciding with Tanzania’s long dry season and Northern Hemisphere summer holidays. Trails are clear, skies are generally cloudless, and this period overlaps beautifully with the Great Migration in the Serengeti — making it easy to pair a summit with a safari.

January to March offers a quieter alternative. Trails are less crowded, temperatures at the summit are typically a little warmer, and though there’s a chance of powder snow at higher altitudes, it rarely disrupts a climb. This is a favourite window for climbers who want solitude on the mountain.

Months to Avoid

April, May, and mid-November fall within Tanzania’s rainy seasons. Trails become muddy and slippery, visibility drops, and the added physical strain of wet, cold conditions lowers summit success rates. Some routes and camps also close during the heaviest rains.
