The Kilimanjaro Packing List

Kilimanjaro takes you through five distinct climate zones in under a week — from rainforest heat to arctic summit cold. Layering is everything.

Clothing (Layering System)

Moisture-wicking base layers (top and bottom) — 2–3 sets
Fleece or insulated mid-layer
Down jacket for summit night
Waterproof, windproof outer shell (jacket and trousers)
Insulated, waterproof gloves + thin liner gloves
Warm beanie/hat + sun hat with brim
Buff or neck gaiter
Thermal socks (wool blend) — 4–5 pairs
Gaiters (to keep scree and snow out of boots)

Footwear

Broken-in, waterproof hiking boots (ankle support essential)
Camp shoes or sandals for evenings

Gear

4-season sleeping bag (rated to at least -15°C for summit night)
Sleeping bag liner
Headlamp + spare batteries (summit push starts at midnight)
Trekking poles
Daypack (25–35L) with rain cover
Duffel bag for porter-carried gear
Reusable water bottles or hydration bladder (2–3L capacity)
Water purification tablets or filter

Health & Comfort

Personal first-aid kit (blister care, painkillers, altitude medication such as Diamox — consult a doctor beforehand)
High-SPF sunscreen and lip balm
Sunglasses (UV-protective, glacier-rated for summit)
Wet wipes and hand sanitizer
Energy snacks and electrolyte tablets

Documents & Extras

Passport and yellow fever certificate (if required)
Travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking and evacuation
Cash in small denominations (for tipping crew)
Power bank and camera
